| Why You’re Still Single:
The Things Your Friends Would Tell You If You Promised Not
To Get Mad
By Evan Marc Katz and Linda Holmes
Reviewed by Jennifer Oikle, Ph.D.
Why You’re Still Single is another slim, witty
dating book written by a man and woman hoping to help you
find love. Following in the tradition of He’s Just Not
That Into You, each brief chapter has a topic for which Katz
provides the male perspective and Holmes gives you the female
scoop. Even though the book’s target audience is single
women, most of the insights are gender neutral.
Although the authors promise a new approach to the
age-old question, “Why are you still single?,”
their answer, “Maybe you are shooting yourself in the
foot,” is neither new nor terribly insightful if you’ve
done your fair share of self-help consumption. Nevertheless,
it’s an entertaining review of the major mistakes many
singles make, keeping them from finding or keeping The One.
Most chapters have at least one succinct gem that
hits the nail on the head. Some of my favorites (see if you
are guilty of any):
…I learned that it wasn’t women who sucked- it
was my decision making.
Repeat this to yourself one thousand times: screwed
up people are not more interesting than people with their
heads together.
…Playing games is a great way to attract men
who like games.
…Only he can change himself. And if you can’t
accept him as he is, you should probably let him go.
You have one choice to make and that’s whether
you’re going to let all the worst guys you’ve
ever known live rent-free in your head for the next 20 years.
With the clever chapter headings and the light hearted,
amusing tone this volume is an easy read. However, Katz is
more engaging than Holmes. With him you laugh naturally, while
with her, you get the sense that she’s trying too hard
to be funny- which is a little distracting, as is her over
use of the f-word.
So, if you’re still searching for true love,
a few evenings worth of bedtime reading will enable you to
peruse the 29 possible mistakes that could be getting in your
way. You’ll probably recognize many of these obstacles
in your dating history and there’s a good chance that
one or more is still creating a roadblock on your journey
toward romance. Because of this, it’s worth your time.
